King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

Now in its 13th year running, Bigsound festival once again hit Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley over two September nights. Sadly for us, the new issue of Slam had to be sent to the printers at the same time, so we were only able to catch a glimpse of this year’s festival. Damn deadlines! But, what a glorious glimpse it was. In 2014, Bigsound enjoyed its biggest event yet. 120 bands lit up 12 different venues in the Valley and hundreds of keen music-lovers scurrying through the streets in an effort to soak in as many epic sounds as humanly possible.
Our Bigsound experience began with one of our favourites – King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. The ridiculously prolific, eclectic seven-piece crammed the stage at The Elephant and unleashed the wild and unpredictable beast that is King Gizzard in the flesh. The winners of the 2013 Independent Music Award belted out nothing but new tunes from their soon-to-be-released fourth LP, I’m In Your Mind Fuzz, and they clearly have another absolute ripper in store.
Over at The Underdog, Pikelet (aka Evelyn Morris), offered a stark contrast with a soothing, almost trance-inducing set, with help from Pond frontman and solo artist Nicholas Allbrook. Evelyn clearly knows how to reel in and captivate an audience – impressive stuff.
All too soon, our Bigsound bash finished with The Murlocs at the New Globe Theatre. The perfect venue for the Geelong five-piece, who howled their distorted brand of soulful r’n’b, even accepting the helping hand of a chubby, shirtless drunk who crashed the stage and really sucked at tambourine. Lead man Ambrose Kenny-Smith kept his laughter in check and held it together to finish off their cracking set with "Loopholes", the incredible title track from their debut LP, to the packed room of stoked and swaying punters.
Don’t miss Bigsound when it rolls around on September 9–11 in 2015.
