Poppy Olsen and her mate Alex were road-tripping north through Queensland last Sunday when their car got clipped by an overtaking truck. The 23-tonne truck was going about 100 k’s when it hit their van on the right side.

“I don’t remember much from when we were hit, but I must’ve thought I looked pretty cool,” Poppy wrote on Instagram, captioning a selfie of her in a neck brace with blood running down from her lip. “My friend Alex suffered a broken rib, hole in her liver, seatbelt burn and [a] huge gash on her leg, but I was lucky enough to walk away with a face whack, concussion and some teeth and stitches through my lip.”

Recently back from the Tokyo Olympics, where she came fifth in the women’s park event, Poppy and her friend were on their way to Magnetic Island to go scuba diving. Poppy’s mum Thomas explained to the Newcastle Herald that they had been turning into a campground at Ayr when the truck overtook them and sideswiped their van. Poppy was taken to Bowen Hospital and Alex was taken to Townsville Hospital.

Poppy ended her post: “We were told that if the timing of the crash was even half a second later, this would have been a very different story. Cheers universe for keeping us here another day.”
